Henry Cavill, famous for playing Superman, has this adorable pet to thank for saving his life

Henry Cavill has been a good lover of pets since the time he was a boy. And even though the actor has had his share of troubled years in recent years, he says his dog Kal has saved his life.

At the opening ceremony of Warner Bros. Pictures Home Entertainment’s “Nocturnal Animals” junket, Cavill, now 35, spoke with producer Jeremy Kleiner about his issues with alcohol addiction, broken relationships and an angry stalker that ended up in jail.

“A very long time ago, I lost my best friend, my dog,” Cavill says. “My best friend and also to balance everything out, my dog who then, more recently, I had a problem with a stalker, and he came to me like no other animal has before. He said, ‘You have to take care of yourself first and then take care of everyone else.’”

“Then we’re here at this illustrious breakfast,” he jokes.

The actor attributes his tough times to an early death of his mother. When he was in 12th grade, a random letter from an unknown address at Harvard University made it to his father’s house. He thought it was about him, but he learned it came from his old friend and former boyfriend, who had committed suicide. “It was scary, it was perplexing, it was wonderful, and I had been hiding under a rock for six months and then it hit me how important it was to me,” he says. “I didn’t know how to handle it.”

Kleiner asks Cavill if he is really smart, and he says that he’s helped by having an array of smart people around him, such as his “old but wiser” agent, Joseph Machinist, an actress named Brenda (by accident) and Brenda’s friend, writer Sacheen Littlefeather, who played Christine Chubbuck on “A Prairie Home Companion.” (She famously spurned the role of Nancy Reagan in Robert Altman’s “Nashville,” because the producers wanted a white actress in the role.)

Cavill will be playing CIA agent Superman in 2017’s “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and next year’s “Justice League,” with Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. He will also reprise his role as Cavill in the untitled “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” film.
